About
If you have never been, at some point in your traveling life you must stop by St. Petersburg, Russia. Make it a priority. I went there for one week, and ended up staying two and a half years. I have never fallen head over heals in love with a city as I did with Russia’s northern capital. There were always outside reasons, excuses, for living there - but the real reason was that I wanted to live there. I first taught debate there for a few days in summer, then returned for six months of language study, and eventually earned a Masters Degree. It was quite the ride, encompassing the most extreme peaks and valleys, physically and emotionally.
Eventually, though still madly in love with the city that Peter built, I understood that I could stay no longer. I moved on, in body if not in spirit. I worked for a few months in a drilling company in the Western desert of Kazakhstan. Then spent some time squatting at a friend’s place in Moscow while I traveled about the former Soviet Union - visiting the people and places that I had studied and written about. It’s strange to think that five years ago, I knew nothing about Russia except what I read. Now, I can’t imagine who I would be without her.
Six months ago, after reading the newspaper and being frustrated for far too long, I decided to return to America. John McCain’s presidential campaign had faltered, had been written off by most everyone in politics and the media. Saying some very difficult goodbyes, to people and places, I got on a plane and returned to America, determined to do everything I could to help McCain’s campaign rise from the ashes. After four Russian winters, they campaign thought that Iowa was a natural match, and I spent two months carving the name McCain in the frozen plains. Then Michigan, a brief respite in sunny California - my homeland - and am now in Washington DC.
I don’t know where the next six months will take me, just as five years ago I never could have predicted the turns that fate had ahead of me. All I know is that I’m where I need to be, and I saw my candidate complete one of political history’s greatest comebacks.
