I found the monument to Putin

Owen | Russia | Monday, April 16th, 2007

On Saturday I found the monument to Putin, and it just so happened to be by the monument to Pushkin. This is Pushkin Square on the day of the “March of Dissent.” The whole thing was cordoned off by police, so it wasn’t possible to enter. Instead, there was a pro-kremlin youth rally. I’m busy getting ready to go to St. Petersburg tonight, I’ll hopefully get my “march” entry up tomorrow explaining the complex and absurd politics surrounding the “March of Dissent.

Monument to Putin

Thanks to Peresedov for the picture, I was on the other side of the square, and not able to see.

  1. You’d better go and protest against Gitmo. It’s where to go to protest:

The U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg
Ulitsa Furshtatskaya, 15, St. Petersburg 191028
    Russia — PSC 78, Box L, APO AE 09723

They are losers, they are political corpses who work on WASHINGTONSKY OBKOM money:

  2. It’s interesting reading about this, especially since we’re focusing on media literacy in my Human Sociology class this month and this came up. Showing my classmates the pictures that were linked to the last article produced some interesting reactions from the girls who were ranting about government oppression is evil and should be completely eliminated. However, before this could turned into an interesting discussion, someone brought up the topic of seal culling and the topic got completely derailed O.o

Hmmm…. sections of the novel I’m writing are set in the US consulate general in Petersburg. And on a more inane note, I really like the militia caps with the red brim :P.

  3. Janna, in theory I agree, Government oppression is evil and should be eliminated. I can’t stand it, however, when Westerners moan about the West. We don’t have any problems with freedom of assembly. A few months ago protestors were allowed by the D.C. police to spraypaint graffiti on the Capitol Steps. Just try to get anywhere near Russia’s parliament with a spraycan. Have you been here to St. Petersburg?

Pietari, in case you haven’t noticed, there are plenty of protests in America against Gitmo. The American government allows protests to happen, unlike the Russian government, which shuts them down and replaces them with propaganda shows strictly controlled by the police. And haven’t you heard, Gitmo is far better than an average Russian prison.

  4. It’s good to know that hooligans aren’t allowed to vandalize Russia’s parliament.

And, in short, the “freedoms” to disturb the peace and worsen your society are not ones I can understand.

  5. Owen,

Yeah Cuba is a nice place- I was there, Abu Graib is a little bit sandy, but also a cool place to stay.
Uhh, yeah, guilty until proven innocent huh?

  8. I agree that people shouldn’t be allowed to vandalize government buildings, but what about freedom of speech, even if it is sometimes annoying. Do you really think that the government is always right, and that anyone opposed to it just wants to makes things worse? Who disturbed the peace more, the 2,000 cops who closed down Tverskaya, or 200 protestors?

    Comment by Owen — April 20, 2007 @ 12:17 pm

  9. Owen,
I have a lot of questions to the goverment and personally to Gref, Kydrin, Zurabov. But I protest in civilized way. The same days here was the anti-goverment Trade Unions meeting but without western cameras, because demonstrators haven’t an idea to shut down street traffic.
btw this meeting gave a start to the strike at the Coca Cola plant :)

    Proletarians of all countries unite!

    Comment by Pietari — April 20, 2007 @ 7:02 pm

  10. Цhat, exactly, are your concerns, and how do you protest? And what’s the problem with Coke? Should all Russians be forced to drink Kvas and Mors?

    Comment by Owen — April 21, 2007 @ 1:18 am

  11. I like Kvas ! Down with Coke !

Anyway, I’d take disturbance over the total, complete, Stalinist kind of peace any day.

    Comment by Bugmaster — April 23, 2007 @ 3:23 am

  12. The problem with Coke is that capitalists didn’t made an indexation for the last 3 years.
Inflation has ate the salaries. Same thing happened at Ford plant

  14. I find it deliciously ironic that the anti-American song is a). performed in rap, which is a purely American style of music (if you want to call it that), and b). does not rhyme. Not only is it rap, it’s actually bad rap. (Ok, I should say, it’s even worse than regular rap). So, it looks like in the field of music, Russia is not, in fact, “gde yest’ sila”. Heh.

    Comment by Bugmaster — April 25, 2007 @ 9:12 am

  15. Moron Bug,

    It’s not ANTI-AMERICAN song,- it’s pro-Russian song.

    Learn the Russian tongue, first.

    Comment by Pietari — April 25, 2007 @ 5:11 pm

  16. Apparently, in the Russian tongue, “f*** USA” means “I love Russia”. Live and learn !

    Comment by Bugmaster — April 25, 2007 @ 7:23 pm

  17. Bug-moron,

It isn’t anti-American song. Listen again.
“Fyck America” is just a symbol in the song/video.

    Comment by Pietari — April 25, 2007 @ 10:38 pm

  18. Just for fun (and because my friends couldn’t stop laughing when I showed them this pro-Russian song), I’ve made an attempt at translating it to English. WARNING: Strong language and weak wording ahead. Owen, I’d be curious to get your input on it; it’s been a while, and my Russian slang is rusty.

I tried to stay faithful to the original text, at the expense of readability and style, because the original text lacks them.

    ——-
    America, America, it’s pretty
But Russia — that’s where the power is (where the power is) !
    (repeated 4x)

America, who brings to Russia only lies and stupid whims (*),
Of the sugarcoated, trashy, empty life,
Pours itself into the brains of our youth, trying to subvert
Our foundations, trying to change the essence
    Of Russian worldview, corrupt the pillars of existence;
Make it so we’ll follow the prompt mindlessly,
    Seeing a fairytale in it,
Finally sell ourselves for a million bucks,
Sign the bottom line while choking on movie-theater popcorn.

    America, America, it’s pretty
But Russia — that’s where the power is (where the power is) !
    (repeated 4x)

The power of money — what ! — dirt is sweet,
Pawns who think they’re kings (**)
    Scream that we’re driven by envy;
    F*ck no, it’s pure hatred
Can’t love can’t respect the sh*t from which
They mould the myths, it’s ridiculous.
Psychos fart over there, it stinks over here
America’s got nothing, Russia knows it !

I never was in the States, I couldn’t give a sh*t what happens there
I was born in Russia — there’s my capital city !
    Where people don’t get mad
    When the roof is on fire;
    Their values are higher
That’s the special quality of the Russian soul
Down here, the American Dream is an idiot’s dream (***)
    We’re birds, we’re free-flying birds !
And let everyone think the power is
On the left side of the map, we know it’s on the right
Russia is a great nation !

    We’re biiiiiirds !

    America, America, it’s pretty
But Russia — that’s where the power is (where the power is) !
    (repeated 4x)

    Hey !
Stop, enough with the negativity, my house is my fortress.
Don’t say that Russia’s poorly picking up scraps from the West
    This trap is f*cking weak, trust me;
It’s designed for those who care not about the Motherland.
America wanted peace, became a shooting gallery
Souls sold to Bush for safe munchies
Under the gun, their world order is collapsing
The world order of fat, swag(*), and feeding troughs (****).

    America, America, it’s pretty
But Russia — that’s where the power is (where the power is) !
    America, America, it’s pretty
But Russia — that’s where the power is (where the power is) !

(*) Not sure how to translate this word properly… Owen ?
(**) In the original, idiom about a Russian card game, not sure what the proper equivalent is… Poker, maybe ? Do they have trump suits in poker ?
(***) Russian idiom, meaning “obsessive unrealistic dream”, hard to translate
